Biography, short form
James E.C. Perry served as the eighty-fifth justice of the Supreme Court of Florida from 2009 to 2016. Born in New Bern, North Carolina in 1944, he graduated from St. Augustine’s College and Columbia Law School, served as a first lieutenant in the United States Army, and practised civil and business law in Florida for three decades. In 2000 he became the first African American judge appointed to Florida’s Eighteenth Judicial Circuit, and served as its chief judge from 2003 to 2005. Seminole County dedicated a courthouse annex in his name in 2024. He is the author of Benchmarked.
