What the book is
It follows a boy born in New Bern, North Carolina in 1944 through a segregated childhood, an HBCU education, the United States Army, Columbia Law School, thirty years of Florida practice, and finally to a seat on the state’s highest court.
It is a personal book about a public life. It is candid about what changed over those decades, what did not, and what it cost to move the line even slightly.

The chapters run from A Purpose-Driven Life and Same South, Different Day through The Immeasurable Influence of the HBCU, In the Ivy League, Hanging Out the Shingle, and Do Not Judge Lest Thou Be Judged, closing with The Highest Bench, Working for the Supremes, and Monumental Moment.
